Happy 5th Birthday, and Another Minion Cake

Today was my son's 5th birthday.  We were pretty low key today, and only had Papa and Bugga over for a little cake and ice cream, and to open presents.

We had a pretty big snowstorm last night, so there was plenty of snow for sledding today, which the boys were thrilled about.  I didn't let the two year old out though because he was sick several times last night.  I think he's better now, but still not back to his energetic self yet.

But the other two had plenty of fun.  It wasn't quite as cold as the 9 year old makes it look - it was at least 18 degrees at this point.  We're supposed to get to -7 tonight, so 18 is pretty good, and it wasn't windy.  We had all the wind last night with the storm.  Crazy wind.

This morning it didn't look like we had gotten as much snow as we had - it was all blown away and drifted.  But in town where it was more sheltered, there was probably close to a foot of snow.

The first thing our birthday boy said when we said happy birthday to him this morning, was "My trucks!!"  He was just sure he was getting trucks.  So I made a special run to the Family Dollar to get him a couple of monster trucks.  While I was in town, I picked up some donuts for breakfast.  We had his favorite foods today - pigs in a blanket for lunch (made with little smokies and crescent rolls), and lasagna for dinner (but he was too wound up about his party to eat any of it).

After playing in the snow this morning, we came into town for the nine year old's swim lessons and the birthday boy's therapy sessions.  His preschool is not in session this week, but he did have therapy today.

We're not usually there for it, so it was a treat for the two year old to get to explore all the new toys.

This one was pretty fun - made of wood and painted bright colors.

When we got home, we Skyped with their big sister who is away at college (she is almost 21).

It was a pretty fun conversation.  Does anyone else think of the movie Benny and Joon when you see these goggles??? ha

Of course everybody had to get in on the conversation.

Then it was time to open presents.

Bugga got him this cool pillow cover.  He wanted to use it to jump his trucks over, but the two year old was all about snuggling on it.  (It's really super soft).

The two year old managed to convince Bugga that he needs one too.

There were also these cute Minion slippers.  I found these at Kmart and couldn't resist.

They even have wiggly eyes!

Chasing a monster truck - I found him a set of two at the dollar store today - a red one and a blue one.

Time for cake!  When I made the minion cupcakes with the twinkies on them earlier this week, I used two cake mixes to make a marble cake.  I put the extra batter in an 8x8 pan and figured that would be enough for tonight.

I think it turned out pretty cute.

It took quite a bit of huffing and puffing to finally get all the candles blown out.

I used the same yellow frosting - mixed with whipped cream for the minion head. I rounded the top edges because I was worried that a square yellow face would look more like sponge bob, which we hate.  I used chocolate fudge frosting for everything else, and large marshmallows and brown m&m's for the eyes.  The hair is black licorice laces.  The nine year old insisted that the candles go in the hair.

Our birthday boy doesn't like frosting or anything else on his cake, so the unfrosted rounded edges of the cake were for him. Bet you don't see that very often.  Usually kids are fighting for the piece with the most goodies on it.

It was a great birthday, and he received lots of awesome... boxes - ha.  He put one on his head and carried one and pounded on it like a drum.

And added sound effects - see the tongue?  What a fun kid.
