Showcase Showdown, Day 2

The last day of Showcase Showdown was Friday.  We enjoyed a workshop on Weather Experiments.  We learned a lot about high pressure and low pressure through the Bernoulli principle, demonstrated with a Bernoulli bag ...

And a hair dryer.  Very interesting and it makes total sense to me now why it is so windy in Arlington (remember I took a picture of the still windmills as it was such a rarity?)

Our leader is a meteorologist with the national weather service.  He was fun and interesting.  He also brought a Van de Graaff generator so the kids got to play with lightning.  Sorry about the picture being so dark but they had turned the lights off so they could see the spark and I didn't want to ruin it (and blind everyone) with a flash.

He also had a machine that created a tornado.

The kids got to touch that and mess with the air current.

The two year old was anxious to try that one too.

It made their hands a little damp because it uses cold water to make the fog.

The five year old was a little worried about it, and couldn't make himself touch it.

We had quite a bit of down time waiting for the awards ceremony to start at 1:30.  We didn't have any more competitions, and only the one workshop to attend, so we held onto our room right up to the noon checkout time, then went to lunch.
The ten year old used the time to work on his summer reading bingo challenge.  He had to finish 10 books at 5th grade reading level within one month.  I think it was a little short (and we found out when we checked in at the library yesterday that he was the only one to complete the challenge so far - more may show up today as this is the cutoff day.)

The two year old's favorite thing to do over our stay was to play in the closet with the sliding mirrored doors.  We went to the awards contest to find out how the food cookoff went.  They only announced the top three teams, and we weren't among them.  Oh well.  We'll try again next year.  I haven't seen our score cards yet to see what areas need improvement.
