The five year old had a preschool program Wednesday. It did not go well.
It was partially my fault for not paying closer attention to the time before allowing him to start a video. We had to stop it in the middle to leave, and he was very unhappy about that. Then when we got there, several families were already seated in the room which they usually use for a playroom, and it was just too much for him. Too many people and everything out of balance. He never would sit down or cooperate. He only made it through the first one and a half songs/activities (without participating in either one) before he had a total meltdown and his aide had to take him out of the room.
Later, he was still out of sorts and very vacant. He did get his certificate which he first tried to crumple or destroy.
He wouldn't admit that everything was better, but when his brothers came to see him, he shoved the certificate in their faces, and seemed proud of it.
Thankfully they responded very kindly toward him.
The preschool kids had all decorated cookies for their families. These were his. He first said he didn't want them, but also wouldn't let any of us have one.
He packed them around for the rest of the time we were there (and all the way home) but did show them to the brother who is allergic to them. I don't think he was trying to be mean - he seemed proud of them. Anyway, it was 5 hours later before he finally came up to me and said we could get them out. Then he ate one and gave one to me, and everything was fine. :) And the last two he saved for Daddy and gave them to him when he got home.
